Ricky Gunawan


Ricky Gunawan is an Indonesian human rights lawyer and the Director of Community Legal Aid Institute (LBHM), a leading legal aid organization based in Jakarta, which he co-founded in 2007 to provide free legal services for victims of human rights abuses and marginalized groups, including people who use drugs, people living with HIV, sex workers and LGBT people. LBHM also advocates for legal reform and human rights protection through research and analysis, policy work, and campaigning. Ricky is also a lecturer at Atmajaya Catholic University and Jentera Law School, where he teaches Drug Law and Policy.

Ricky earned his law degree from the University of Indonesia, and holds an MA in Theory and Practice of Human Rights, from the University of Essex, with full scholarship from the Open Society Foundations. In 2017, he won the British Council Award for Social Impact in Indonesia, recognizing his exceptional contribution and commitment to creating positive social change and improving lives. In 2019, he was a Global Justice Fellow at the Center for Criminology, University of Oxford.
